CABARET

In Berlin in 1931, American cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) meets British academic Brian Roberts (Michael York), who is finishing his university studies. Despite Brian's confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for them both. This love triangle plays out against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic.

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT

When drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, he invites fellow cross-dresser Adam (Guy Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. In their colorful bus, named Priscilla, the three performers travel across the Australian desert performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship.

Working his way up from being a song and dance man to one of the top movie stars of the silent era, Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) finds his career in jeopardy with the advent of talkies. Studio bosses insist that his next production features synchronised sound, but it becomes abundantly clear that his egocentric co-star does not have a voice suited for the new medium. Don recruits an aspiring “serious” actress (Debbie Reynolds) to dub the parts and raises his co-star’s anger even further when he starts to fall for her.

STOP MAKING SENSE

Filmmaker Jonathan Demme captures Talking Heads and an ecstatic ensemble of musicians at their exhilarating best in this iconic live performance. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG

Geneviève, a young Frenchwoman who works at a small-town boutique selling umbrellas, falls for mechanic Guy. Their brief romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted to serve in the Algerian War. Though pregnant by Guy, Geneviève marries an older businessman, Roland, and begins to move on with her life. Throughout the musical film, all the characters' dialogue is conveyed through song.
