Lunana: Bhutan’s first Oscar nominee explores ‘happiness index’.
Bhutanese writer and director Pawo Choyning Dorji's first film — and Bhutan's first ever Oscar nomination — is set in the real village of Lunana, a remote community of nomadic yak herders situated at a dizzying altitude of more than 11,000 feet.
Trainee teacher Ugyen is disappointed that his final term will be spent in Lunana, a remote village in northern Bhutan. A lengthy seven-day walk from the nearest drop-off point, it’s a place Ugyen is desperate to leave. But as winter approaches, cutting off access to the outside world, he becomes increasingly involved in the lives of his students and the community. Filmed with solar-powered cameras, this is a breathtaking window onto a rarely seen world.
