In La Grande Bellezza, one of Italy’s most awarded film in recent years, we meet 65-year-old Jep Gambradella (Toni Servillo), a wealthy, successful yet jaded writer facing the gradual realisation of his empty, decadent existence and failure to live up to his potential. As the ‘king’ of elite Roman society, he is deeply immersed in “all of its splendour and superficiality, magnificence and malevolence, artifice and significance”. But after a sudden and unexpected visitor he begins to re-evaluate his life and the city he loves.
